The Candida Report: How Hidden Yeast Infections Can Impact Your Health

What Is Candida?

Candida is a genus of fungal organisms commonly referred to as yeast. There are about 20 different species of yeast, many of which are useful to humans. Many of us consume yeast every day. Yeast is used in many ways from making things like bread, beer, wine and many other adult beverages. Yeast is also present in the bodies of most humans, often in the digestive tract.

The Fungus Among Us

The yeast which is present in almost all humans is Candida Albicans. Candida Albicans can be introduced in a variety of ways. During birth, a mother can pass it on to her child. Candida can also be passed on during sexual contact. Sexual transmission of Candida can occur during seeminly innocent contact such as kissing, if the yeast is present in the mouth of one of the persons. It can also be passed on during oral sex or sexual intercourse. Candida can not be passed on through the air, so you don't have to worry about catching it like influenza.

Candida usually resides in the digestive tract or the vagina. In a healthy person, a natural balance is usually kept between the yeast and the bacteria in our bodies. Candida overrun occures when there is a change that either causes the bacteria to weaken or the Candida to become stronger.

Good Yeast Gone Bad

The good news is that a healthy person, with a strong immune system, can live an entire lifetime with Candida in their body and never know it. The bad news is that some people, especially those with diabetes or compromised immune systems can become overrun with Candida.

Candidiasis

The condition of having a yeast infection is called Candidiasis. While most anyone can get Candidiasis, certain people are more at risk:

People At Higher Risk For Candidiasis:

  • Diabetics: Because diabetics typically have a high amount of sugar in their blood and urine, yeast will take the opportunity to feed off of this excess glucose and overrun the body.
  • Post Menopausal Women: Studies have shown that because of the hormonal and physical changes in post Menopausal women, the Candida will take advantage of a more ideal environment for it to grow.
  • Uncircumcised Men: The foreskin in uncircumcised men can trap moisture. Candida loves little more than a warm, moist and dark place to grow. Diabetic men who are uncircumcised are at especially high risk due to the high sugar content in their urine.
  • Cancer Patients: Because the strong treatments that cancer patients endure also kill off the immune system, yeast will grow unchecked.
  • Persons with HIV/AIDS: Because of the weakened state of their immune systems, persons living with HIV/AIDS are at high risk for Candidiasis.
  • Persons on antibiotic treatment: It seems ironic but the fact is that antibiotics, while killing off bad bacteria, also kill off the good bacteria in our bodies which serve as part of our immune systems. Because of this, antibiotics actually weaken our natural defenses. Weakened defenses mean a good environment for Candida to thrive.
There are some obvious symptoms of yeast infection. Unfortunately they may not always manifest themselves in such an obvious way. The more obvious symptom of Candidiasis is thrush. Thrush is a cheesy white discharge which can come from the vagina, the penis, the anus or the mouth. Another more subtle (if only slightly) symptom of Candidiasis is fungal infections of the toenails or fingernails. However, Candidiasis can impact your health in many other ways that you might not associate with yeast.

Other Symptoms of Candidiasis:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Acid Reflux
  • Acne
  • Anxiety
  • Apathy

The Bad News

If you have Candidiasis, the creams and pills and diets and other nonsense that are often pushed by the medical industry and by unscrupulous marketers hardly ever work. In fact, they can make your yeast infection worse! Imagine limiting your diet so severely that you miss out on the foods you love for weeks on end, only to have the Candida not only come back, but come back with a vengeance.
